For the past few days I had myself watching this particular series "2 broke girls" as it showed up amongst many suggestions in Amazon prime and the thumbnails too quite stood up with a bright pop of colors which I found appealing. So I started watching this sitcom. It was a pleasant ride, more like 'Friends' where a group of friends are there for each other as they figure their lives out.
The episode 1 of the first season starts off with a brief intro of a very bold character, Max Black who puts some rude customers in their place. Max has had a dark and rough past, and she does drugs, which are her remnants of her past. She is now broke, lives in a rented house in an apartment (without paying the owners and escaping magically each time) where she is not the actual tenant and works as a waitress in The Williamsburg Diner run by a very short, boyish looking Asian, Han Lee who also has an enormously huge head. Soon after, the other protagonist Caroline Channing, who is the daughter of a millionare dad who's currently in prison for money fraud, comes into picture as she makes a grand entry with her prominent, expensive and branded pearl necklace and dressed in radiant white dress, seeking for a job as a waitress as all her pricey possessions are held up. She is practically from riches to rags.
As Max being the other waitress she finds her more comfortable to confide in as a friend. Max helps her with a home although reluctant at first as she doesn't have the habit of making friends or getting attached. Caroline considers that a great help and constantly tries to show her gratitude to Max which she doesn't like and yet other times Caroline's innocent idea of helping her friend back, manifests into something completely opposite.
Max makes good cupcakes. Throughout the season you'll see a lot of that (at-least up-to season 3). They're for sure very tempting and delicious looking. By the time you're into the 2nd season you'll start toying the idea of either making cupcakes or starting up a cupcake business. Anyway, when Caroline realizes Max makes good cupcakes, she suggests she should have her own business because they could be successful eventually. Max who is constantly reluctant to even believe that life can be easy and hardship-free doesn't concede even though she herself had the idea years back. But Caroline, who has very positive outlook about life, gets her to agree and she keeps pushing Max constantly for her not to give up. Caroline, having graduated from Wharton, takes things into her hands helps Max to help the business grow. She manages business while Max makes cupcakes.
So, that's how the story goes. You get to see all the struggles they face as a startup even on an everyday basis, so many failures and rejection, the ups and downs of a business venture. For some time period, in fact, the business just stinks and they have to deal with the losses and their poverty. Despite that they work hard and they do not give up on their dreams and somehow an opportunity opens up for them when things definitely seem to have come to an end.The story also gives you a perspective about many things: the rich, poor, being in an underpaid job. The story also shows how Max and Caroline develop a strong bond and a friendship which was beautifully done by the actors. They are completely opposite which somehow brings a balance in their friendship. The fact that they are team makes their journey a lot more exciting.
One of my favorite quote in the series is when Sophie, another character, tells Caroline and Max about living one's dream. That is one big mistake we all do, we don't actively take steps to live our dreams in every possible way. It is a beautiful thought and it's so true that you don't have to keep thinking that your dreams are in the future and just fantasize it. Instead you could start living your dream bit by bit and before you realize you'll be in that future you have always dreamed of. "Dress for the job you want, not for one you have", another quote from the series. Live your dreams, don't have to wait.
